Cynical
O God,
We can be so cynical; we can be so sure that everyone else’s motives are unsound and that no one is to be trusted.
We do need to be discerning; we cannot naively assume that everyone is sincere. Give us wisdom to be discerning but grace not to be cynical.
Help us to face up to the real but hard to face possibility that our cynicism toward others is a reflection of who we know ourselves to be. Help us to examine ourselves to see whether we question everyone else’s motives because our own motives are so questionable. Help us to grow in sincerity and integrity that we might better detect and appreciate those qualities in others.
There is so much negativity in this old world; help us not to add to it through a cynical attitude.
Let us instead become purer in heart and sounder in spirit that we might become more positive and more insightful.
Amen.
